EAU CLAIRE, Wis., March 10 — Blugold Radio staff have been awarded first place for “Best Radio Newscast” by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association through its Student Awards for Excellence ceremony held in Madison, Wisc. on March 7.
Student-run radio stations from campuses across Wisconsin compete in the annual WBA Student Awards for Excellence. Entries are judged by educators from outside the state of Wisconsin.
Blugold Radio, a three-hour program produced by UW-Eau Claire students on 89.7 WUEC-FM, revamped its programming three years ago to expand student-produced news. “This award recognizes the work of the entire Blugold Radio staff to improve the quality and quantity of news about the campus and this community,” said Dean Kallenbach, Wisconsin Public Radio senior regional manager and professional advisor for Blugold Radio.
The award-winning newscast was a 5-minute segment that originally aired on Sunday, Nov. 9. 2014. The newscast features news reporter Kiri Salinas reporting on the results of the Wisconsin gubernatorial and legislative elections and Blugold Radio News Director Glen Olson reporting on a Student Senate initiative to allow students to opt out of third- party emails.
Every week, the Blugold Radio news team reports on a variety of different events happening on campus, in the community and in the state. The news segments are part of the weekly three-hour programming produced entirely by students. Blugold Radio airs Sundays from 5- 8 p.m. on WUEC 89.7 FM and the broadcasts are posted at WUEC.org.
